Turkish Ambassador to Japan Visits Tohoku University

On Thursday, April 14, 2022, Turkish Ambassador to Japan, Korkut Güngen, visited Tohoku University and called in on President Hideo Ohno.

After welcoming the ambassador and his delegation, President Ohno noted that Turkey, like Japan, is an earthquake-prone country. He used the opportunity to introduce the University's initiatives in the field of disaster science, including the establishment of a tsunami inundation and damage estimation system and the formulation of international disaster prevention standards such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the ISO for disaster prevention.

Ambassador Güngen reflected on the Great East Japan Earthquake and expressed his interest in the university's initiatives to expand risk management efforts against natural disasters. He also noted that cooperation in the fields of science, technology, and energy is important for Japan-Turkey relations, and welcomed continued international exchange with Tohoku University through academic research.

After his meeting with President Ohno, the ambassador gave a lecture on Japan-Turkey relations and an overview of Turkey at Tohoku University's Graduate School of Public Policy.
